How would I get a new macbook purchased in the US over to italy without paying a huge Duty Tax?
I'm studying abroad and I need a new laptop. I configured a macbook I want on the US version of the site, then realized they don't ship abroad. I went to the italian version and find they cost about the same -- 'same' as in the number. $2000 -> 2000Euros. WAY too expensive. Having my parents ship it from the US wouldn't work either, as italian customs is notoriously slow and expensive. I can have someone bring it over on a plane, but I don't know anyone coming over. Could I possibly lie on the customs forms and say they're books? I've heard that if you state the value as less than $10, they rarely check the box. What could be the size of a macbook box and cost less than $10? Can I ship it to France or somewhere else and take a train to go pick it up? I need ideas. Thanks in advance.

I was able to bring 3 macbooks over from the US to Germany by plane. When customs searched my bags I told them that they had not been bought in the US and I had saved some files on the computers and also loaded a desktop picture to make it look as if they were already a couple years old. I believe you should try to find someone to bring one over for you. I don't know however how much packages are controlled. good luck

I drag mine back and forth to Italy all of the time. Ship your new mac to your parents house in the states, then have them load some files on it. I wouldn't want to get busted at customs for being a mule, so I'd need to do a little research on the topic first, but I might be willing to bring it over on my next trip. I'll be in Italy in May and all of July. Feel free to email me anytime. Michelle
