Can laptops run on different voltages

Can laptops run on different voltages?
Fodor's Rome 2004: Most laptops run equally well on 110 and 220 volts and so require only an adaptor (in Italy). How can this be the case? I though transformers change a voltage only as a ratio, so if the input voltage is increased, so would the output. Surely this would damage sensitive components??

Most of contemporary chargers are designed in a way they can work both with 220 and 110. Even very primitive chargers from cheap mobile phones can do that. To be sure, you should read the sticker on the embossed text on the charger, where it is stated, what input voltage it takes (usu. something like "100-240V" will be written). The DC output of these chargers is constant and also stated on the adaptor.

There may be multiple trasnformers in the adaptor which switch automatically based on the input voltage. I don't know for sure, but theoretically this could be the method. It raises another question as well. How do you insert the plug into a 220 outlet?

What do I need for my Sony Laptop (from USA) to work in Italy

What do I need for my Sony Laptop (from USA) to work in Italy?
The voltage in the US is 110V and in Europe its 240V (i think). So, I would like to know what I need for it to work in Italy, some kind of adaptor or converter?

The computers, as well as Laptop support volatage from 110 - 250 V so only thing that you will need is the switch so that you will be able to plug you laptop into the electricity network so you will be able to charge it. BTW in europe the standard for most countries is 220, so you do not have to worry about anything getting messed up.

hi,, good day well from what you are telling about the difference of voltage ,, well yes you have to buy a voltage converter,, they offer those at any electronic store like Fry's electronics or walmart or look in the yahoo search.. oh 1 more thing if you get to work in Italy email me yea so i can know if you got it work..good luck check the 1s link they offer more electronics then any other store

If the range of voltage acceptable to your laptop is shown as 110 - 230V, all you'll need is a plug converter, that'll allow you to plug the American style plug in the European one. They use 2 round pins, not flat ones like we do.

You will need a US to European adapter ....as the plugs are different . Its sometimes also called Universal Adapter/Convertor .... There is no Electronics in it ...its just a connector which has a US socket on one side (where ur US pins go in) and has various diff plugs on the other side ...so that u can choose what to use. U just need the right adapter as the power plugs are different in Italy. Its simple and effeicent and a MUST HAVE if ur a Business Traveller. The most certain place to get it is on the Flight or in travel stores on the Airports in US or Italy. The charger for ur laptop will handle the voltage automatically. U can also find these adapters online or in large Electronic stores ....its better coz the ones on the flight are costly.

Check your laptop rating plate - for input voltage rating if its 110V / 60Hz then you will need another adapter to connect that will step down (convert) 240V input in Europe to 110 volts where you can connect the power plug of laptop. EURO Power outlet (240V) = > Adapter => (110V) => Laptop Just ensure that there is no switch to change the voltage setting on laptop. Please refer the laptop manual for clear instructions. In case you do not have one, visit the manufacturer website and download one related to your laptop model and go through it rather than blowing up the laptop due to negligence. If you are not sure consult a technician

I live in Italy for three years and that is not the place for a good deal on Laptops, Maybe Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan or South Korea and better yet Taiwan if your going to take a trip, but I now live in the Philippines and you can buy a nice Laptop in Southern California for about the same as Taiwan, A lot of Laptop stores sell a no brand Laptop with out hard disk and CPU for under $400 dollars made in Taiwan, just ask around.....

I'm traveling to Italy and the Hotel's Website says free ADSL, can I connect my Laptop with an ADSL line

I'm traveling to Italy and the Hotel's Website says free ADSL, can I connect my Laptop with an ADSL line?
I know the electrical outlets and plugs are different in Europe, but are the phone jacks different as well? I want to make sure I can connect to the internet (I don't have wireless), before I take my computer.

Usually, the connections are the same and you can use a U.S. phone line for the connection. To rest your mind, email the hotel and ask if you have to have a special adapter to connect to the ADSL. Perhaps you know ... ADSL is a form of DSL only the speeds are different for sending and receiving. Good luck
